I Hotel 1972: Ben and Olivia

The marriage of Ben and Olivia is one that is extremely complex and at times confusing. They seem to argue at great length and neither of them seem to understand the other. It appears as though they have conflicting views on almost everything, including thier political views. Ben tends to be more of a realist while Olivia tends to be more of a pessimist byt is still dedicated to bringing awareness to issues that are close to her.
In chapter 7, Ben is telling Olivia that "This is not Cuba. The material conditions are not ripe in the U.S. You are working against a majority that represents a basically provincial American state of monolingual people" (362). Olivia, on the contrary gets rather heated and upset about his statement, "Through our mass work, we can speed things up, but we need direction" (362) which also shows her optimism. It is interesting to me that people that are so different can function in a relationship as seriosu as marriage. I am also curious as to what similarities they have besides sharing the same interest of raising awareness of isssues that are toubling for them. Are they only married for the purpose of making a statement because they are in a biracial relationship?
